'Australia, England, West Indies and South Africa': Why Michael Vaughan's Prediction for the T20WC 2024 Semi-finals Cannot Happen
Michael Vaughan had predicted that Australia, England, South Africa and West Indies would make it through to the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2024. But he missed out one key aspect which rules out his prediction.

Former England skipper, Michael Vaughan took to social media to reveal who his semi-finalists for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 were. His predictions did not include India but that was not the main issue here as his followers called him out for missing out on one major point.

Vaughan took to X where he revealed his top-4 picks who would make it to the semis. This included some decent-quality sides like England, Australia, South Africa and the West Indies.

One thing that the former England international failed to take into account was the fact that these four sides can’t make it through to the semi-finals.

This is because of one big factor which is the pre-seeding for the tournament which the former England player had not taken into account.

According to the ICC’s FAQs for the T20 World Cup 2024, the pre-seeding for the super-eights ensures that certain sides like India and Pakistan for example would not be in the same groups following the league stages of the tournament.

India and Pakistan who are part of Group A in the league stages, if qualified for the super-eights, would be A1 and A2 respectively.

In this instance, South Africa’s case was highlighted and the article mentioned that regardless of the Proteas side’s position on the table (first or second) they would be classed as D1. This means that the other team that qualifies from group D would be D2.

In group C however, New Zealand would be classed as C1 and assuming co-hosts, West Indies also make it through, they would be C2.

The Super-8s have been divided into two groups. The issue here is that the second group would have three of the teams that Vaughan had predicted which means that it is practically impossible for his predictions to come through as only two teams from each of the super-8 groups would make it through to the semi-finals.
