'All I Could See Was World Cup Flying And...': Suryakumar Yadav Reveals How he Pulled Off That Catch of David Miller
Suryakumar Yadav took an exceptional catch under pressure to get rid of David Miller in the last over of the 2024 T20 World Cup final.

Catches win matches and some times tournament. Suryakumar Yadav’s sensational catch of David Miller in the T20 World Cup final certainly sealed the fate of the title in India’s favour.

In a pressure cooker situation, Miller launched a full toss from Hardik Pandya in the final over as South Africa needed 16 runs to win off six. The ball seemed headed over the boundary cushions at long-off but Suryakumar ran across and pulled off a superb catch and as he realised the momentum was pushing him out of the field of play, he lobbed the ball back, recovered his balance, leapt back and completed the catch.

Miller was the last specialist batter in South Africa’s batting order and his exit all but confirmed India’s win.

When queried what he was thinking during the catch, Suryakumar said all he saw was the world cup trophy and he grabbed it.

“I really don’t know what was going through my mind. All I could see was the World Cup flying away and I just latched on to it,” Suryakumar was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

41 years ago, the brilliant running catch the the legendary Kapil Dev took to dismiss Viv Richards in the 1983 ODI World Cup final is part of cricket folklore and it triggered a seismic shift in Indian cricket landscape.

BCCI president Roger Binny who was part of Kapil’s title winning India squad, feels that Suryakumar’s catch is on par with his former captain’s ‘magnificent’ effort.

“Kapil’s catch was magnificent in its own right,” Binny said. “He had to run back, keep an eye on the ball and complete the catch, which he did with great ease. This was a case of incredible athleticism, where Surya was dealing with the variable of the boundary rope. We would have probably lost if he had dropped it, just as it was with Kapil’s catch. These two catches are on a par.”
