The Indian women’s cricket team will face six-time champions Australia in their fourth and last Group A match of the ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 on Sunday (October 13). The high-voltage match between the two finalists of the 2020 edition of the tournament is scheduled to take place at Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Australia leads the Group A points table, whereas India sits in the No. 2 position. The match against Australia is a must-win for India because a defeat can end their hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals.
India is coming into Sunday’s match after getting the better of Sri Lanka by 82 runs in the last match played on Wednesday (October 9) in Dubai. The Women in Blue will be desperate to maintain the super show and defeat Australia.
Ahead of the India-Australia match, here’s a look at how these two teams have performed against each other in six Women’s T20 World Cup matches played so far:
2010: India’s first match in the Women’s T20 World Cup against Australia was played in Gros Islet on May 13, 2010, and in that fixture, Aussies hammered India by seven wickets. The Women in Blue could only manage to post a total of 119 runs on the board for the loss of five wickets, which the Southern Stars easily chased down in 18.5 overs for the loss of three wickets. Captain Alex Blackwell top-scored for the Australian team by remaining unbeaten on 61 runs.
2012: In the 2012 Women’s T20 World Cup match, Australia defeated India by 8 wickets in Galle on September 27, 2012. Erin Osborne’s 3 for 13 helped Jodie Fields & Co. restrict India to 104 for 8 in 20 overs, and then Meg Lanning’s 39 and Jess Duffin’s 36 not out helped them achieve the required target for the loss of two wickets in 17.2 overs.
2018: India secured its first win over Australia in the Women’s T20 World Cup on November 17, 2018. In the match played in Providence, Harmanpreet & Co. beat Meg Lanning’s side by 48 runs. Smriti Mandhana’s 83 and captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s 43 helped India post a total of 167 runs on the board, and then the Women in Blue successfully managed to defend it by dismissing the Australian team for 119 runs in 19.4 overs. For India, Anuja Patil picked up three wickets, and two batters each were sent back to the pavilion by Deepti Sharma, Radha Yadav, and Poonam Yadav.
2020: India beat Australia by 17 runs in the first match of the 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup played in Sydney on February 21, 2020. Deepti Sharma’s 49 helped India post a total of 132 runs on the board for the loss of four wickets, and in reply, despite Alyssa Healy’s 51, Aussies got all out for 115 runs in 19.5 overs. Poonam Yadav picked up four wickets for 19 runs, and pacer Shikha Pandey dismissed three Aussie batters.
2020 (final): India faced Australia again in the final of the 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup, which was played at Melbourne Cricket Ground on March 8, but this time Australia managed to beat India and settle the scores. Alyssa Healy’s 75 and Beth Mooney’s unbeaten 78 helped the hosts post a total of 184 runs for the loss of four wickets, and India got all out for 99 runs to lose the match by 85 runs.
2023: India faced Australia in the first semi-final of the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup on February 23, 2023, in Cape Town but suffered a heartbreaking defeat by five runs. In reply to Australia’s total of 172 for 4, India could only manage to score 167 for 8 in 20 overs. Harmanpreet Kaur topscored for India by scoring 52 runs in that match, whereas Jemimah Rodrigues contributed 43 runs from 24 balls.
India has faced Australia overall 34 times in T20Is so far and only managed to win on seven occasions. The Aussies have won eight out of the last 10 matches played between the two teams.
