Two captains of Indian industry Captain Nair and Russi Mody dead
Captain Nair was the founder of ultra-luxury hotel chain Leela Group of hotels and Russi Mody was the former chairman of Tata Steel.

Two stalwarts of the Corporate India Captain CP Krishnan Nair and Russi Mody died on Saturday. Captain Nair was the founder of ultra-luxury hotel chain Leela Group of hotels and Russi Mody was the former chairman of Tata Steel.

Russi Mody was also joint chairman of Air India and the erstwhile Indian Airlines, died in Kolkata at the age of 95 on Friday, an official said on Saturday.

Born in Mumbai January 17, 1918, Mody was a leading member of the Tata Group and served it in various capacities, later earning the sobriquet of India's "Steel Man". He was appointed to head the airlines in 1993.

A Padma Bhushan awardee Mody had joined Tata Steel in 1939 and rose through the ranks took become the Director of Personnel in 1953. He became the Director of Operations in 1970 and then the Joint Managing Director in 1972.

Captain Nair, a doyen of the hotel industry was the founder Chairman of The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts, passed away peacefully at the age of 92, following a brief illness.

His family was beside him, a press release from the hotel group said. The last rites will be performed on Sunday, May 18, at 3 pm at Pawan Hans crematorium in Juhu, Mumbai. A memorial prayer ceremony is scheduled at The Leela Mumbai, Sahar, at 4 pm on Thursday, May 22.

Captain Nair is survived by his wife Madam Leela, their sons - Chairman and Managing Director, Vivek Nair, and Co-Chairman and Managing Director, Dinesh Nair, their wives and children.

A freedom fighter and an officer of the Indian army who later built a luxury hotel chain, Captain Chittarath Poovakkatt Krishnan Nair is a Padma Bhushan awardee.
