Mumbai: People of Mumbai are expecting a lot from the Railway Budget. The Mumbai Suburban Railway is a mass transit system serving the city. The suburban railways carry more than 75 lakh passengers across Mumbai on a daily basis.
People face a lot of problems related to medical facilities and cleanliness while travelling by train in Mumbai. The heavy crowd during rush hours and the carelessness of commuters are two main reasons to be blamed for the high number of deaths while travelling. The Bombay High Court agreed and expressed its unhappiness that adequate first aid and medical facilities are not available at any railway station in Mumbai.
But the situation is still the same even after the High Court's observations that many people die in accidents as there is a lack of medical facility.
Social activist Sameer Zaveri said that an injured person needs medical aid within the first hour of accident. Several people die due to excessive bleeding.
Although the carrying capacity of a coach in the Mumbai local trains is only 1800 passengers but there can be 8000 passengers in the morning and evening during the rush hour. So, there should 1500 more coaches in Mumbai local trains but that has not happened
On the other hand, the number of overbridges at railway stations in Mumbai are also very few and many of the signals do not function properly work during the rainy season. The proposal to increase the height of 36 platforms has been in the pipeline for several years and the modernisation of Boriwali, Andheri and Dadar stations too are pending.
All such plans are yet to be implemented. Mumbai Train Passengers Organisation President Subhas Gupta said that several schemes are announced in the budget for Mumbai but they are never implemented.
