New Delhi: The Sensex closed at 12,042.56, with gains of 190.63 points or 1.61 per cent after Friday’s closing. It touched an intraday high of 12,061.06 and an intraday low of 11,881.51.
The Nifty surged 49.25 points or 1.40% to close at 3557.60 after touching intraday high of 3565.75 and an intraday low of 3508.35.
The CNX Midcap settled at 5141.15, up 119.9 points or 2.39% after touching an intraday high of 5145.55 and an intraday low of 5055.20.
The BSE Small Cap Index ended up 191.17 points or 2.65 per cent at 7,397.48. The BSE Midcap Index closed at 5,843.29, up 144.34 points or 2.53 per cent.
The market breadth was strong, about 1853 shares advanced, 494 shares declined, and 58 shares remained unchanged.
The total market turnover recorded at Rs 20419.95 crore. The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 4060 crore. The BSE cash turnover was at Rs 1445.08 crore.
Experts say that the markets continue to remain robust and every nervousness or sharp crash has been followed by an equally sharp recovery.
Experts also say that the corporate results and the fundamentals of the economy being the way they are, one critical difference is the confidence among domestic investors in terms of investing into the Indian equities which is very evident if one looks back four-five months of the inflows into the domestic equity mutual fund.
The most active stocks on the BSE were Hindustan Zinc with a volume of 5,68,024 shares, Reliance Communication with a volume of 15,99,696 shares, Tantia Construction with a volume of 15,32,894.
On the corporate front, Spanco Tele board has approved UK acquisition for USD 4 million.
Reliance announced that it plans to invest Rs 58,500 crore in hydrocarbon business.
The steel prices in the market will hike from May 1, 2006 across the products. The price hike will be in the range of 2-10 per cent across products, said sources.
They also said that the price hike is due to increase in raw material prices. HR Coil prices are likely to go up by Rs 1500 per tonne. The Nickel prices have touched 20-year high.
The NSE F&O turnover recorded at Rs 14914.87 crore (Rs 149.14 billion). The Nifty futures ended with discount of 10 points. It added 3 lakh shares in Open Interest. Sterlite, Reliance, Reliance Capital, Century Textiles and Hindalco were the top trades for the day in the NSE F&O segment.
Grasim, Gujarat Ambuja Cements, ACC, Hindalco, SBI and VSNL were the movers of the indices.
Losers on the indices were HLL, Dr Reddy's Labs, Sun Pharma, HPCL and BPCL.
Cement stocks including Grasim, Gujarat Ambuja Cements and ACC were the star performers in today`s trading session.
Metal stocks including Hind Zinc, Sesa Goa Hindalco, Sterlite Ind, Welspun Guj, Nalco, Jindal Stainless, Jindal Steel, Jindal Saw and SAIL were among the top gainers. The BSE Metal Index was up 362.16 points or 3.48 per cent at 10,762.23.
Consumer durables including Titan Industries, Mirc Electronics, Su-Raj Diamonds, Samtel Color and BPL also moved up. The BSE Consumer Durables Index closed at 3,458.62, up 105.22 points or 3.14 per cent.
Banking stocks including Bank of Baroda, PNB, SBI, ICICI Bank, Canara Bank, Bank of India and Andhra Bank also closed in the green. The BSE Bankex ended up 112.04 points or 2.18 per cent at 5,245.79.
Auto stocks like Hind Motors, MICO, Tube Investment, Ashok Leyland, TVS Motor, Bharat Forge and Escorts also witnessed buying at the bourses. The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,548.91, up 101.75 points or 1.87 per cent.
Oil & gas stocks like Petronet LNG, Reliance, and ONGC also stirred up. The BSE Oil & Gas Index closed at 5,687.90, up 0.76 per cent.
Pharma stocks like Cadila, Matrix Lab, Aventis Pharma, Apollo Hospital, Cipla and GSK Pharma also climbed higher. The BSE Healthcare Index ended at 3,894.84, up 1.32 per cent.
Technology stocks like Patni Computer, Hexaware, Moser Baer, i-Flex and HCL Info also moved up. The BSE IT Index closed up 1.06 per cent at 4,034.92.
Capital goods stocks like Alstom Projects, Praj Industries, HEG, Ingersoll Rand, KEC Infrastructure, Dredging Corp and Carborundum also surged. The BSE Capital Goods Index closed up 0.73 per cent at 8,811.05.
FMCG stocks including Shaw Wallace, P&G, Nirma, Dabur India, ITC and McDowell also firmed up. The BSE FMCG Index ended at 2,312.19, up 0.52 per cent.
Hindalco Industries Q4 net profit is up at Rs 626 crore from Rs 448 crore (Rs 4.48 billion). Its net sales are up at Rs 3,657 crore from Rs 2,516 crore.
Jet Airways Q4 net profit is up 70.67 per cent at Rs 227 crore from Rs 133 crore. Its Q4 net sales are up 35.41 per cent at Rs 1,625 crore from Rs 1,200 crore.
ICICI Bank Q4 net profit is up 28.51 per cent at Rs 790 crore from Rs 614.7 crore. Its Q4 net interest income is also up at Rs 1,216 crore from Rs 790 crore. The company has declared dividend of Rs 8.50 per share.
Nalco's Q4 net profit is up 44.14 per cent at Rs 608 crore from Rs 421.8 crore.
