New Delhi: State-run gas utility GAIL India Ltd plans to invest Rs 15,000 crore in coal gasification and power plants in Orissa.

GAIL would invest Rs 2,000 crore in converting coal in gas (surface coal gasification) at Talcher.

The project, which would use Shell technology, would convert 4,400 tonnes of coal per day into gas that can feed a 4,500 tonnes per day urea plant. Alternatively, the gas can also be used to power generation.

Besides, it plans to lay a high-pressure 1,140-km, Rs 4,000 crore pipeline from Kakinada and Haldia, feeding major towns like Balasore, Bhadark, J K Road, Cuttack and Khurda in Orissa.

The firm also plans to implement city gas distribution projects in Orissa, supplying compressed natural gas (CNG) to automobiles and piped natural gas for domestic use in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.

GAIL chairman and managing director Proshanto Banerjee discussed with the state Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday on different ventures GAIL had planned in Orissa.

GAIL and the state government will soon finalise a comprehensive 'Energy Cooperation Agreement,' which would pave the way for GAIL's major investments in Orissa.

The state government expressed keen interest in involving GAIL in Rs 4,000 crore power plant in Orissa.
