Sanya Malhotra is still basking in the record-breaking success of her film Jawan, headlined by superstar Shah Rukh Khan. Sanya essayed the role of Eram, a doctor who joins Shah Rukh’s gang of girls to set society straight. She also features with Shah Rukh in some songs of the film like Zinda Banda. As the film gears up for it’s premiere on January 28 on Zee Cinema at 8 pm, Sanya spoke exclusively to News18 Showsha about having played an important character in the film.

How was it working with Shah Rukh Khan?

It felt surreal to share screen space with the absolute King, the Badshah of all hearts. My focus was always what I could learn from superstar Shah Rukh Khan. When I got this opportunity, it’s something I could never have said no to because I’m a huge Shah Rukh Khan fan. To get to work with him, to be around him, to see him work – why would I say no to it even in my dreams? All I did was observe him. I would look at the way he conducts himself and trust me he left me in awe every time. I now understand why people love him so much

Did you perform your own action sequences? Any special prep?

The training that I have been doing post Dangal really helped me prepare for my action sequences in Jawan. We went through gun training and we had to prepare beforehand for all the truck sequences. It was a lot of prep but it was important to get the smallest nuances right. This is my first pan-India commercial action film and Atlee Sir really helped me get out of that bubble I was in. Atlee Sir is a genius.

Women were seen in power positions in the film. How was it playing such a role?

In Indian cinema, we often see powerful films centered around male heroes championing women’s causes. Jawan breaks this mould. Shah Rukh Khan brings together five fierce women, amongst many others, recognises their strengths, their pain, and they together go on a mission that is larger than you, me or anything. On set, Shah Rukh Khan would always stand up to greet a female co-star or technician. He treated us as equals. All of this is reflected in the kind of films he does, and how women are portrayed in his movies.

The actress will next be seen in Mrs, a Hindi adaptation of the Malayalam superhit The Great Indian Kitchen.
