One of the leading streaming platforms of the country announced the exclusive digital premiere of Vicky Kaushal starrer, Sam Bahadur, on January 26th. Directed by Meghna Gulzar and produced by Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP production, the war biopic chronicles the extraordinary life of Sam Manekshaw, from his early days of being the chief of army staff to his well-deserved retirement, exploring the milestones and triumphs of his illustrious journey. Meghna Gulzar exclusively told News18 Showsha how she went about making this movie about Sam Manekshaw’s life.

The film touches upon the relationship between political leaders and military figures. Can you share any insights into how you approached capturing the dynamics between these powerful personalities on screen?
I completely relied on interviews or anecdotes that Sam himself has shared, which have been published in interviews or his books that have been written about him. There was no here say involved. His interactions with PM Nehru or PM Indira Gandhi, when she became Prime Minister, are all part of his archival base. Whether it’s an interview he gave on TV, to a magazine, or in a documentary feature made by his grandson, we have relied only on that. If there’s anything not corroborated by something he has said, we have not touched it.
Sam Bahadur and Animal released at the same time; do you think that Sam did not get its due credit in the theatres? And if it hadn’t been released with another film, it would have performed better?
It has performed better than what people were predicting it would. So, I think that will answer the question itself.
Now that the film has released on ZEE5 in 190+ countries, what would you like to say to the viewers? Why should people watch the film?
I would really tell the viewers that you should watch this film to know about this man. I would emphasize to the viewers that you should watch this film to learn about this man who is an ideal, an icon, and a role model. He is extremely relevant even today because integrity never gets outdated, right? Honesty, integrity, and righteousness never go out of style. So here is a man who lived his life according to those principles, and it’s a life journey that we, as a generation that may not know about it, should be aware of.
