The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has finalised the plan to finish the Trichy Semi-Ring Road project, which aims to connect five national highways that run through the city, 10 years after civil work began.
According to TOI, the project includes extending a two-lane segment to four lanes, erecting an elevated corridor on the Trichy-Madurai National Highway, and constructing a flyover to connect two stages of the semi-Ring Road. It is anticipated that construction on the updated plans will begin in 2025.
To provide a clear route to relieve traffic in the city, the NHAI has combined three different projects for the semi-ring road. Additional government initiatives nearby, like the Trichy Trade Centre, would profit from this clarity as well.
Under the NHAI’s tender document, the stage II portion of the road, which currently runs from Thuvakudi (Thanjavur NH) to Panjapur (Madurai NH), would be enlarged from two lanes with paved shoulders to four lanes.
There will be safe entry and departure points at the intersections of country roads and the semi-Ring Road, extending the 25.9 km stretch between Thuvakudi, Mathur and Panjapur to four lanes.
Furthermore, Stage I of the semi-Ring Road, which will run from Panjapur and Jeeyapuram (Karur NH) via Thayanur (Dindigul NH), will also be of four lanes and cover roughly 19.9 kilometres.
An elevated route on the Trichy-Madurai National Highway at Panjapur has also been proposed to circumvent the planned integrated bus station, wholesale vegetable market and truck terminal.
The NHAI has claimed that the necessary land is already available for the entire 45.8 km section, but the Detailed Project Report (DPR) will determine if any additional property parcels are required.
A proposed 3km elevated route on the Trichy-Madurai NH at Panjapur would avoid the truck terminal, wholesale vegetable market and soon-to-be integrated bus station. Moreover, a little flyover is suggested to connect the semi-ring road’s phases I and II at their intersection close to Panjapur.
Trichy Corporation has set aside about 20 acres of land in Panjapur to construct grade improvements, with two levels of elevated highways planned. This will enable National Highway-bound traffic to escape the crowded bus terminus and market areas.
