Renault & Volkswagen Partner for Affordable Electric Cars: A Game Changer? What's the Deal, Current Status and Future Predictions.

Renault plans to team up with another company for their new electric car, Twingo, by early 2024. Insider news hints that Volkswagen might be one of their choices.

While Renault talks with different carmakers about working together, they’re keeping the exact details, like who and when, a secret.

Volkswagen hasn’t said anything about this yet. But insiders spilled the beans that Renault and Germany’s Volkswagen are actively discussing a tie-up for the new Twingo EV.

They’re likely to make a decision about who they’ll partner with by the end of this year. A source, staying anonymous, shared this info since the talks are still going on.

Renault brought out the Legend, a new Twingo EV priced under 20,000 euros ($21,500), aiming to make electric cars more affordable. Meanwhile, Volkswagen announced their own all-electric car, set to come out in 2025 for 25,000 euros. They hinted at a 20,000 euro vehicle in the works but didn’t give out much detail.

On December 8, Handelsblatt said Renault and Volkswagen are talking about teaming up for the 20,000 euro electric car. This move matches the trend in the industry where companies are trying hard to make cheaper electric cars.

A research firm, JATO Dynamics, found that in the first half of 2023, electric cars in Europe cost more than 65,000 euros on average. That’s way higher than in China, where it’s around 31,000 euros. Renault and Volkswagen working together could mean more affordable electric cars in Europe.
