Amid a spike in pollution levels, the Delhi government on Wednesday announced that it was banning all commercial app-based cabs registered in other states after the Supreme Court’s directive on air pollution.
According to the Delhi government’s order, only taxis bearing the registration number of Delhi will be allowed to ply within the national capital. The order comes after the Supreme Court on Tuesday said that many cabs are plying on Delhi roads, with only one passenger.
Noting that many such taxis have registrations in different states, the apex court asked the Delhi government to consider allowing only cabs that are registered in the national capital.
The Supreme Court in the past few days issued several directions on Delhi’s air pollution issue including finalising details of the odd-even car rationing scheme, crop residue burning, vehicular pollution and burning of waste in the open.
Environment Minister Gopal Rai said that the government will consider all the directives before implementing the policy.
Rai on Monday announced that to combat pollution, the odd-even scheme will be enforced in the national capital from November 13-20.
Rai said he held a meeting with senior officers of the transport and environment departments and the traffic police to discuss the modalities of the odd-even scheme.
The government will now study the SC order and include its suggestions and directions to plan further, he added.
