After Metro, Rapid Rail and Mono Rail, preparations are underway to introduce a ‘Light Rail System’ in Delhi-NCR. The new Light Rail Transit System (LRTS) will connect Noida International Airport to Film City via the Yamuna Expressway and will be integrated with the Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS).
According to a report by Times Of India, the decision related to develop LRTS was made during a board meeting of Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA). During the meeting, NCR Transport Corporation presented plans for a 72 km long rapid rail route between Noida Airport and Ghaziabad.
Following the meeting, officials announced that a proposal for the light rail link from Noida Airport to Film City has been submitted to the central government for approval. Previously, there had been plans to connect this 14 km route through a pod taxi system, with initial preparations made in 2021. The first tender for 12 stations along the expressway was issued in July of last year, with an estimated project cost of Rs 641.5 crore.
However, YEIDA was later tasked with studying the feasibility of pod taxis and light rail. After the UP government approved the 72 km RRTS corridor connecting Ghaziabad and Noida Airport, the NCRTC submitted a project report outlining for both pod taxis and light rail.
YEIDA CEO Arun Veer Singh stated, “The plan now encompasses three services – metro, RRTS and light rail – operating on the same track, with only loops and sections differing. Metro trains will run at interval of 3.5 minutes, rapid rail every 7 minutes, and light rail every 8 minutes.”
The UP government has already approved the scheme, which has now been forwarded to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for final approval.
