A day after two Indians were reported to be missing following an earthquake in Taiwan, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday informed that the government is now in touch with them. The MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal also said that the two individuals who went missing are safe.

Informing about the two Indian nationals who were reported missing in the Taiwan earthquake, the MEA spokesperson said, “We have been now able to get in touch with the two people with whom earlier we could not establish contact. They are safe.”

Notably, the two Indian nationals, a man and a woman were last seen in Taroko Gorge, near the epicenter of the strongest earthquake in the last two decades.

Notably, soon after strong tremors were felt in Taiwan, the Indian Taipei Association set up an emergency helpline for Indians in Taiwan and asked Indians to follow the instructions of the local authorities.

Intense Earthquake Strikes Taiwan

Strong tremors rocked Taiwan on Wednesday morning, killing nine people, stranding dozens at quarries and a national park, and sending some residents scrambling out the windows of damaged buildings.

The strong earthquake also resulted in Japan and the Philippines issuing tsunami warnings, which were later called off.

The earthquake that hit Taiwan was also confirmed as the strongest earthquake to hit the country since 1999. In 1999, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake killed around 2,400 people and injured over 10,000.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended support to Taiwan and wrote, “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to earthquakes in Taiwan today. Our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured. We stand in solidarity with the resilient people of Taiwan as they endure the aftermath and recover from it.”
