Travelling, whether by train or plane, offers a unique experience. People frequently travel by train as well as plane to see beautiful sights, but they are unaware of some unique aspects of these modes of transportation that make them even more special. However, while trains and aeroplanes operate on different principles, they both serve the same function of transporting goods or people from one location to another.
When we are travelling or sitting ideally, we may wonder what’s more powerful: a train or an aeroplane. If you’re curious and didn’t know, then read further.
Train Engine:
A train can transport thousands of people from one location to another, whereas an aeroplane can only carry a few hundred.
One of the most convenient and enjoyable aspects of the train journey is that you do not have to worry about arriving early at the station. You can board the train at any time before it departs the platform. You do not have to arrive at the railway station 2-3 hours early.
Currently, India’s locomotive fleet consists of both electric and diesel models. Except for heritage trains, steam locomotives are no longer in use in India. Other names for a locomotive are loco or engine.
According to Engine Technology Forum, while the average car engine produces approximately 200 horsepower, locomotive engines typically produce between 2,000 and 4,500 horsepower. Train operators rely on diesel power for a wide range of rail power applications. The smallest locomotive engines (up to 2,000 horsepower) are used in freight yard switch operations to assemble and disassemble trains, as well as in short hauls for small trains.
Last month, Indian Railways shared a video on X (formally known as Twitter) of India’s most powerful electric locomotive, Wag12B, which has a power output of 12,000 horsepower.

Plane Engine:
On the contrary, the train may take 1-2 days or more to reach a destination, but the same work, the plane completes in hours.
Furthermore, the engine of a plane is the most powerful of all medium-sized vehicles. According to Monroe Aerospace, jet engines can easily generate more than 30,000 horsepower. To put that number in context, most cars and trucks have engines with 100 to 200 horsepower. Because of their weight, aeroplanes need stronger and more powerful engines, Monroe Aerospace reports.
