Imagine the deputy speaker of a prestigious government house referring to Taylor Swift fans, popularly known as Swifties as ‘striptease’. Hilarious, right? Well, that’s exactly what happened in the Dewan Rakyat, the lower house of the Malaysian parliament on March 13 this year. The deputy speaker of the house, Datuk Ramli Mohd Nor, ended up creating a humorous moment when he mistakenly referred to the fan group as ‘striptease’.
Shared by an Instagram page that goes by the name Mothership, the video was captioned, “his mind was really in a blank space.” It starts with Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil addressing the members of the lower house of the Malaysian parliament. He can be heard saying, “Even though I’m not a Swiftie, a few of my MPs might be Swifties. I feel that (MP of Bangi) might be a Swiftie, I don’t know. Indera Makhota, are you a Swiftie? No, right?
Notably, his comment on Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan comes in the backdrop of the latter’s X post from last year in which he hailed Swift for her album 1989. Fadzil, then, goes on to admit being a Sitizoner, a fan of Malaysian songbird, Siti Nurhaliza. Seemingly confused, Ramli, interrupted the Minister saying, “YB, striptease?!” However, Fadzil immediately corrected him saying, “No, it’s Swiftie, Taylor Swift.”

Given the popularity of Taylor Swift and her fan club, the post was immediately viral on social media. Several users flooded Instagram with their reactions to the clip. A user wrote, “This is what they discuss in Parliament? I thought they have more serious matters to discuss about.” A fan of Swift chimed in saying, “Taylor swift has somehow become a political topic for many countries. Hmm.” “I’m watching this in the middle of the night and it made me laugh out loud,” added a third.
