Sony Has Sold 50 million PS5 Consoles: Here’s The Reason For The Sudden Surge
Sony's PS5 sales have quickly surged past 50 million. Read on to find out how Sony achieved a quick turnaround after battling supply chain issues.

Sony has now announced that it has sold more than 50 million units of the PlayStation 5 console worldwide. The PS5 was first launched on November 12, 2020, and now, it has been a little over three full years since the console’s release.

This milestone marks a significant achievement for the Japanese gaming giant as it seeks to maintain its lead against rivals like Xbox in the future. Much of the credit for this accomplishment goes to the recent surge in stock that Sony has been able to produce. In fact, the company has released a new updated slimmer model that is slightly smaller than the original console.

For those uninitiated, earlier in the console’s life cycle, the PS5 remained in short supply due to the global semiconductor shortage, preventing the supply chain from functioning properly. This highlights how quickly Sony managed to sell around 10 million units since July when they revealed that the PS5 had sold 40 million units.

In addition to the solid availability of stock, Sony has launched multiple flagship games over the last three years, including the recently released Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, a direct continuation of Marvel’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Other notable releases include God of War Ragnarok, Demon’s Souls, Returnal, and third-party exclusives like Final Fantasy XVI. It is safe to say that this robust and diverse gaming library has contributed to the PlayStation camp’s increased sales, allowing them to outsell the Xbox Series X|S consoles.

“We’re grateful for all of our players who have joined the PS5 journey so far, and we’re thrilled that this is the first holiday season since launch that we have a full supply of PS5 consoles—so anyone who wants to get one can get one,” Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, said.
