"Happy Independence Day, [name of user]! From all of us at Facebook, we hope you enjoy celebrating India's 68 years of independence," says the message that is followed by an image of three kids holding the Tricolour above their heads.
Facebook is also prompting users in India to add "celebrating Indian Independence" to their status messages.
Twitter on its part has added support for then Indian flag emoji to allow Indians worldwide celebrate the day.
On the Google India home page Mahatma Gandhi is seen leading protesters in breaking the British government's unfair salt laws.
