New Delhi: Called ‘the monarch of mountains’ by Lord Byron, Mont Blanc is the highest point in the Alps and towers more than 15,000 feet above Europe’s sea level.
For centuries, Mont Blanc had never been trekked up to its peak. However, on August 8, 1786, Frenchmen Michel Gabriel Paccard and Jacques Balmat reached the top for scientific research armed only with alpenstocks and measuring equipment.
Celebrating the 229th anniversary of the first ascent, Europe’s pioneering spirit, stunning landscapes, and one-of-a-kind landmarks; Google has created a special doodle for its homepage that shows two figures reaching the highest peak of the incredible Mont Blanc.
The snow-capped mountain is considered one of the world’s deadliest mountains and has highest fatality rate in Europe, yet, thousands of hikers trek the difficult path upon the Alpine towns of Chamonix, Saint-Gervais, and Courmayeur to recreate the iconic expedition.
