Kolkata: Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien on Wednesday said that the party will take Prime Minister Narendra Modi seriously only if he reveals the names of the people and organizations who are killing people in the name of cow vigilantism.
While raising the matter in the Rajya Sabha, he said, “On June 29, 2017, the Prime Minister said that killing people in the name of ‘gau bhakti’ is not acceptable. We all know what happened a few hours later in Jharkhand.”
“Empty words and generic comments won’t work. Please name the groups, name the individuals and name the organisations. Then we will take you seriously. Otherwise we are deeply suspicious,” he added.
“I have problem with this term ‘cow vigilantism’. The real term is ‘cow terrorism’ or ‘gau-atank’. This is ‘cow terrorism’. And I want to build on this argument because this is exactly what the BJP wants,” the TMC MP said.
“For each such killing, the Centre is passing the buck to the state government. The problem is they are lighting the fire in the states, then they want us to put out the fire,” he said.
Hitting out at Amit Shah, O’ Brien said that the BJP president must be living in “la la land” for saying there was no apprehension about lynching in the country.
Shah had said in Goa on July 2, “Incidents of mob lynchings are serious but these incidents were reported more during the regime of previous governments. There is no apprehension or fear anywhere in the country in the aftermath of such incidents.”
O’Brien slammed the Centre over the increased crimes against the marginalised in the country.
