Varanasi: In a surprise move don-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari will not be contesting 2014 polls in Varanasi against BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. According to Ansari's party, the Quami Ekta Dal, he has pulled out of the race to avoid division of votes.

Ansari had given a tough fight to Varanasi sitting MP Murli Manohar Joshi in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. He lost to Joshi by just 2.6 per cent votes.

Joshi had secured 2,03,122 votes to win by 17,211 votes against Ansari, who was a BSP then.
