Lucknow:  Over 60 per cent polling was on Thursday recorded in Alapur Assembly constituency in Ambedkar Nagar district, official sources said.

"60.06 per cent turnout was recorded till 5 PM," the state election office said in Lucknow.

Voting for the reserved constituency (SC) was postponed after Samajwadi Party candidate Chandrashekhar Kanaujia died

of a heart attack while campaigning in Ambedkarnagar on February 12.

Polling in the constituency was originally scheduled for February 27 in the fifth of the seven-phase Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

According to the law, if a candidate of a recognised party dies, it is given time to field a new candidate and the polling is fixed for another date.

The seat is currently held by Bhim Prasad Sonkar of the Samajwadi Party, but he was not fielded this time.

After the death of 40-year-old Kanaujia, the ruling SP has fielded his widow Sangita Chaudhary. Besides, there are nine candidates, including those from the BJP and the BSP, in the fray.

In view of this polling, the Election Commission postponed the telecast of exit polls till 5:30 PM on Thursday.
