Amid the ongoing seat-sharing talks with the Congress party, the Samajwadi Party (SP) has announced another list of 11 candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Notably, the Akhilesh Yadav-led party has fielded gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari’s brother Afzal Ansari from Ghazipur and Harendra Malik from Muzaffarnagar.

Last year, Afzal Ansari was disqualified as a Lok Sabha MP following his conviction and sentence to a four-year jail term in a criminal case.

A special court in Ghazipur had, in April 2023, convicted Ansari and his brother Mukhtar Ansari, an ex-MLA, in a 2007 Gangsters Act case. While sentencing Afzal Ansari to four years in jail, it awarded 10 years imprisonment to Mukhtar Ansari.

The Ansari brothers were booked under the UP Gangsters Act in connection with the murder of the then BJP MLA from Ghazipur Krishnanad Rai on November 29, 2005, and the kidnapping and murder of Varanasi-based trader Nand Kishore Rungta in 1997.

Here’s Samajwadi Party’s new list of 11 candidates for LS polls-

Earlier in the day, Akhilesh Yadav said Samajwadi Party will not join Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Uttar Pradesh unless seat-sharing between the SP and Congress is finalised.

According to a PTI report, the SP, on Monday, offered 17 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh to the Congress, the party said, asserting that its chief Akhilesh Yadav will join the Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Raebareli only if the proposal is accepted.

“We have given a final offer of 17 Lok Sabha seats to the Congress. Akhilesh Yadav’s participation in the Nyay Yatra in Raebareli on Tuesday will depend on their acceptance,” Rajendra Chaudhary, the Samajwadi Party’s chief spokesperson, was quoted by PTI as saying.
