SGPC to seek mercy for Beant Singh's co-assassin

Chandigarh: The Akali Dal-backed Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee has decided to file a clemency plea before the President for Beant Singh's co-assassin Balwant Singh Rajoana.

Rajoana is on death row for assassinating then Punjab chief minister Beant Singh in 1995.

The decision was taken at the SGPC meeting on Sunday and welcomed by Beant's family.

While the campaign seeking support for clemency to Rajoana gained more support, the Patiala Central Jail returned his death warrant for the second time in less than a week.

Rajoana is scheduled to be hanged on March 31.
