Jaipur: Rajasthan was awash with the lotus of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as Vasundhara Raje led the party to a historic win in Rajasthan and routed the Congress regime. Fighting on the plank of corruption, poverty, price rise, poor governance and a break down in law and order, Vasundhara Raje stormed back to power after five years as the Ashok Gehlot regime was buried deep inside the sand dunes of the desert state.
It's a landslide victory for Vasundhara as the party is eyeing more than 150 seats in 199-member Assembly. The BJP came back to power with 162 seats and leaving Congress with just 21 seats and Others with 16.
Vasundhara won from Jhalrapatan constituency by 60,986 and defeated Congress' Meenakshi Chandrawat. She said this is a historic victory of BJP worker. She said, "First time voters have voted against the mis-governance of the Congress party. It is the win of youth and women power."
Even though Vasundhara was the face of the BJP in Rajasthan, she gave the credit of the success to Gujarat Chief Minister and BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi for the massive verdict. She said, "Modi is a huge factor behind the victory. I give many thanks to the people of Rajasthan and my workers. I dedicate my victory to the people of Rajasthan. People of Rajasthan are fed up of bad governance of Congress."
In a scenario where Vasundhara was campaigning aggressively for nine months, the Congress woke up only in the last few weeks and tried to catch up with its rival. Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot started addressing campaigns just a few weeks before the elections but there were no top leaders by his side. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi addressed only a few rallies which did not get a good response.
On the other hand, BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi was seen addressing five rallies in a day which drew massive response. He campaigned extensively in the state.
The result is the worst ever defeat for the Congress as just about managed to cross the 20-seat mark in the 200-member Assembly. Gehlot conceded defeat but blamed BJP of running a negative campaign to gain votes.
He said, "She (Raje) sought votes in the name of NaMo (Modi) and I consider that it was not her victory in Rajasthan polls."
He also accused the Opposition of creating an 'incorrect' impression in the minds of the voter. He said an "undercurrent" seems to have worked against the Congress adding that although the welfare schemes of his government were good the Opposition had managed to create an "incorrect" impression in the minds of the voter.
