The BJP selected Pema Khandu to be the chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh for a third term in a row. He was re-elected to be the leader of the legislature party meeting, and will stake claim to form the government later in the day.
The BJP’s central observers Ravi Sankar Prasad and Tarun Chugh attended the meeting. The northeastern state, which has a close proximity to China, gave a clear mandate to the BJP as the party returned to power by winning 46 seats in the 60-member assembly.
The BJP also won both the Lok Sabha seats in Arunachal Pradesh, elections for which were held simultaneously with assembly polls in the state on April 19.
After the election results were declared on June 4, the Conrad Sangma-led National People’s Party (NPP) also extended its support to the Khandu-led government in Arunachal Pradesh. The Meghalaya-based party is an ally of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA).
State unit president Thangwang Wangham said the party has accepted the people’s mandate in the recently held assembly elections. “We accept the mandate given by the people,” he said while assuring his party’s commitment to keep the aspirations of the people alive in the state.
The NPP bagged five seats in the assembly polls, while the NCP won three, the PPA won two, the Congress one and independent candidates won in three seats.
