New Delhi: The condition of senior Congress leader VC Shukla, who was injured after Naxals ambushed a convoy of party leaders in Chhattisgarh's Bastar district, continues to be critical, according to doctors treating him. The 84-year-old Congress leader was airlifted to Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon from Raipur early on Sunday morning.

Sources said that there is no damage to his vital organs and the lung infection is under control. Dr Yatin Mehta, Chairman Institute of Critical Care and Anaesthesiology, Medanta Hospital said, "Shukla is undergoing treatment. He is critical but doctors are treating him".

The former union minister on Saturday underwent an operation in Jagdalpur hospital for removal of three bullets he had received in the attack. Heavily-armed Maoists ambushed a convoy of Congress leaders in Chattisgarh's Bastar district on Saturday, killing 27 people including senior Congress leader Mahendra Karma, and injuring Shukla and 31 others.

"The condition of VC Shukla is very critical but stable," Medanta spokesperson Dr AK Dubey told reporters. He said the senior Congress leader has several wounds on his body.

A panel of doctors has been formed to look after him, Dubey said. Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit visited the hospital to enquire about Shukla's condition.

State Chief Minister Raman Singh held emergency meetings and also ordered a judicial inquiry.
