Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Friday clarified that his controversial call for a major surgery in the party after its drubbing in state polls was not against the top leadership.
"My leader number 1 is Sonia Gandhi, leader number 2 is Rahul Gandhi," Singh told CNN-News18's Bhupendra Chaubey in an interview on the 'Hot Seat'.
"When I talk about major surgery, I mean some action has to be taken as per the suggestion given to the Congress president over the year," he said, indicating that it was not a a comment on the performance of the party leadership.
What complicated matters more was that it came after party president Sonia Gandhi made a statement promising an introspection into the reasons for the loss.
In the Assembly elections held in five states, Congress and its allies were thrown out of power in Assam and Kerala, while failing to make a big impression in Bengal and Tamil Nadu.
Commenting on Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley's comment that Congress is now a third front party, Singh said, "Congress is the largest opposition party in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha."
