New Delhi: The absence of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and actor Rekha in Rajya Sabha created an uproar yet again in the House on Friday. The members of Parliament. Addressing the House over the issue, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien said that action can be taken against members only if they have remained absent for at least 60 days. "Both Sachin and Rekha are yet to cross that threshhold," Kurien said.
Senior Congress leader Rajeev Shukla reiterated that he had spoken to both the MPs and they have promised that he will attend more sessions regularly. He was nominated to Rajya Sabha in 2012. According to records, Tendulkar has only 3 per cent attendance in 2013, having attended Parliament only three times. Both the leaders have attended a single session of Rajya Sabha in 2014.
"This is a privilege, a responsibility. It is not a good practice, they should attend the House proceedings. Membership of Parliament is not a trophy, Sachin should come to Parliament," veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar said.
Samajwadi Party MP Naresh Agarwal had hit out at MPs for being absent from the House. "These MPs were selected so that they can be present and make difference in the society. But I have never seen him in the House," he said.
NCP MP DP Tripathi also said that such people should not be nominated to the House. "Their performance in the House has been despicable to say the least. This is insult to Indian Parliament and such people should not be nominated to this House."
