Panaji: The issue of resumption of mining in Goa will be raised at the National Development Council (NDC) meet in the national capital December 27, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said on Monday.
"On the 27th meeting of National Development Council, I am going to raise the issue of mining with the PM," Parrikar told reporters in Panaji.
Parrikar said the ban on mining imposed by the Supreme Court (SC) was hurting the state's economy. The Chief Minister said he would plead for a way out of the imbroglio before the NDC, which is an apex decision-making body headed by the Prime Minister and has chief ministers and union cabinet ministers as members.
Parrikar also said the examination of documents submitted by the mining companies revealed that 60 per cent of Goa's mining industry was legal.
"We will be in a position to restart legal mining in 45 days. Right now we are still in the process of verifying documents submitted by the mining industry," Parrikar said, acknowledging the fact that nothing could be done until the apex court decides on the issue.
Goa's mining industry was banned by the Supreme Court, which is hearing a petition filed by lawyer-activist Prashant Bhushan. The petition was filed after a Rs 35,000-crore mining scam was exposed by a judicial commission a few months ago.
