New Delhi: It was just an innocuous remark. BJP candidate from Sultanpur Varun Gandhi praised his cousin Rahul Gandhi during a political rally on Tuesday saying he admired the work he had done in his constituency Amethi. Two days later, his mother has advised him to be more discreet.
"I told Varun not to comment on anything which you have not seen yourself. What he said is not right. There is no ground work in Amethi," Maneka Gandhi said.
During the rally in Sultanpur, Varun had said, "We require small scale industries, like the ones Rahul Gandhi has set up in Amethi. However, I cannot give that example as I haven't seen the work at the ground level."
Rahul was quick to thank his brother. "I am very happy that others are appreciating the work that we are doing here. We have worked in Amethi with a certain strategy in mind," he said.
Faced with criticism, Varun later retracted his statement. "My comment in a meeting was in response to being asked whether I knew about initiatives in Amethi. It should not be seen as an endorsement of any political party or candidate," he said.
