Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mamata Banerjee's mother passed away in SSKM hospital in Kolkata on Saturday.
Gayatri Banerjee was 81 years old and was suffering from kidney ailments. She was admitted to the hospital on November 25 owing to old-age related illness.
TMC Medical Cell member Nirmal Majhi said the chief minister's mother was admitted to the hospital because of 'problems relating to old age'.
Majhi had earlier said that Gayatri Banerjee's condition was 'critical' and she was on ventilator support.
Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee had gone to Kolkata on December 3 to meet Mamamta's mother.
During his visit which lasted for about 10 minutes, Mukherjee spoke to attending doctors and enquired about Gayatri Banerjee's health.
