Mumbai: The process of attaching ex-Maharashtra Congress chief Kripashankar Singh's 19 properties across the state began on Friday. Singh and his family allegedly own 1 bungalow, 7 flats and hundreds of acres of land in the state.
The Bombay HC had last week asked the police to attach Kripashankar Singh's properties.
Congress leader Rashid Alvi said that the law was taking its own course.
On Friday morning, the Mumbai Police Crime Branch raided Kripashankar's three residences in the city in connection with charges of amassing wealth disproportionate to known sources of income. Kripashankar's residences in Bandra East, Bandra West and Santacruz were searched in connection with the case.
The police teams raided the three premises following reports that some important documents were being destroyed by Kripashankar's aides.
The raids came after Mumbai Police lodged an FIR against Kripashankar on Bombay High Court's orders in connection with an alleged Rs 320 crore disproportionate assets case.
Kripashankar Singh had moved the Supreme Court on Thursday seeking a stay against the Bombay High Court order for his prosecution and attachment of properties in the disproportionate assets case.
The Enforcement Directorate has already initiated an inquiry into Kripashankar's disproportionate assets.
The Congress leader began his life in Mumbai in 1973 as a vegetable seller, but now is reportedly one of the richest politicians in the country.
Kripashankar and his family, whose reported source of income is just a salary of Rs 45,000, now owns a sea-facing bungalow, at least seven large flats in some of the costliest locations across Mumbai, several thousand square feet of commercial property and hundreds of acres of land in and out of Maharashtra.
Mumbai Congress chief till last week, Kripashankar and his family have now also been booked for criminal misconduct under the Prevention of Corruption Act, criminal conspiracy, cheating and forgery.
CNN-IBN has accessed details of 22 bank accounts of Kripashankar's family, which give details of his rise from rags to riches. The Samata Sahakari Bank account number 18966 belonging to his son Narendramohan Singh witnessed a turnover of Rs 60 crore between 2007 and 2009. On paper Narendramohan Singh has no known sources of income.
CNN-IBN has also accessed an I-T scrutiny report of his wife. It suggests that in 2004-05 her total taxable income was nil and income from agricultural land was Rs 69,000. However, an I-T probe established total taxable income to be over Rs 11,60,214.
Similarly, in 2005 and 2008 contrary to her claims of Rs 75,000 and Rs 1,28,000 as agricultural income, the Tax Department found her income to be over Rs 25,91,189 and Rs 1,35,68,333 respectively.
