Bangalore: Karnataka Chief Minister DV Sadananda Gowda is gearing up for an electoral battle for the lone legislative council seat in Bangalore on Thursday.
Gowda is presently not a member of either House of the State Assembly and as per the constitution, he needs to get elected to the state legislature to stay on as the Chief Minister within 6 months of coming to power.
However, the good news for Gowda is that five independent legislators on Wednesday declared support to the Chief Minister for the election, bringing cheer to the ruling BJP which feared cross-voting.
The five independents - Goolihatti Shekhar, Sudhakar, Shivaraj Thangadi, Venkataramanappa and Narendra Swamy - met Gowda at his official residence and held talks with him for nearly an hour, during which he reportedly sought their support in Thursday's poll.
But fears of cross-voting loom large for the ruling BJP and the Opposition Congress. Both parties have issued whips, the BJP on Tuesday even ferried its legislators to a private resort on the city outskirts fearing poaching from Opposition parties.
