Bhopal: A Congress lawmaker has alleged that Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan avoids visiting Ichhawar block, which falls under his constituency of Sehore, due to superstition.
The widely held superstition is that any sitting CM who visits the block, which is barely 56 kilometre from the state capital, soon loses his seat.
The CM’s hometown, Budni, has also not been visited by Chouhan for the last 12 years.
During the Assembly session on Tuesday, Congress MLA Shailendra Patel alleged that CM, during his 12-year stint, had not visited Ichhawar block
“Is he held back due to the superstition that he will lose his seat?” quizzed Patel. The remark came after the lawmaker posed a question to the state government asking for the distance to from the state capital to Bhopal Budni and Nasrullaganj from Ichhawar.
As Chouhan was not present in the House when the query was raised, Finance minister Jayant Malaiya replied saying, “A similar belief existed for Patharia in my hometown Damoh but the CM has visited the block four times.”
Malaiya added that Chouhan had visited Ichhawar on Oct 11, 2017, for a government function.
Patel, though, did not buy this argument saying the CM had visited village Alhadakheri and not the Ichhawar headquarters.
To Patel’s sub-query the state government informed the House that CM Shivraj has not visited Ichhawar in the last five years. Later, talking to News18, Patel claimed that the CM was yet to visit Ichhawar since he assumed office on Nov 29, 2005.
“Every time a CM like Kailash Joshi, Virendra Saklecha, Uma Bharti and Digvijay Singh came to Ichhawar, they were thrown out of power soon after,” said the Congress legislator about the perception of locals there.
On November 15, 2003, then CM Digvijay Singh had attended a function and announced that he was there to break this myth attached with Ichhawar. Soon, he was dethroned by Uma Bharti, who had a landslide victory.
