Jaipur: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Saturday night condemned the remarks made by author Ashis Nandy against backward communities, saying comments outside the ambit of law would not be tolerated. "I do not know in what context Nandy commented but I can say that it is unfortunate if an intellectual has targeted ST, SC and OBC," Gehlot said.
"The government has no objection if any remark is within the ambit of law but none can tolerate if one crosses limits," he said. Nandy kicked up a storm with his comments that people from OBC, SC and ST communities were the "most corrupt". He made the remarks during a session at the ongoing Jaipur Literature Festival.
The remarks not only came under a lot of criticism, but an FIR was also lodged at a local police station against the author under Section 506 IPC (criminal intimidation) and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Earlier while speaking at the function, Gehlot reiterated that protests against participation of Pakistani delegates at the literary festival was unfair as their visit should not be politicised.
"The government of India is handling this issue at its level but as far as the visit of Pakistani delegates to the festival is concern, it should not be politicised," he said. Several groups, including BJP activists, had raised objection on the visit of Pakistani delegates to the festival in the wake of brutal killing of two Indian soldiers by Pakistani Army at LoC in Kashmir.
