Election Commission to declare dates for multi-phase Bihar elections today
Expected to be held in multiple phases, the Assembly elections in Bihar may begin in mid-October.

The Election Commission is set to announce the schedule for the Bihar Assembly elections at 2.30 pm on Wednesday. Expected to be held in multiple phases, the elections in Bihar may begin in mid-October.

The last Assembly elections in Bihar in 2010 were held in six phases over 30 days.

The announcement of dates comes amid a fierce war of words between Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the run up to the polls.

While the Prime Minister recently announced a Rs 1.65 lakh crore package for infrastructural development in the state, the Bihar Chief Minister trashed it, saying the Central aid was "packaged myth" of old schemes to influence the electorate.

Asking the "actual size" of the package, Kumar highlighted that a large chunk of the package up to the tune of Rs 1.08 lakh crore was coming out of the funds already promised to the state for on-going and pre-approved development endeavours and schemes.

Meanwhile, former Bihar chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi also upped the ante on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over seat sharing with his party Hindustan Awam Morcha (HAM), targeting the BJP leadership and PM Modi.

The HAM chief said that it would be a loss for the NDA “if Manjhi doesn’t win good number of seats”.

Manjhi had also hit out at NDA constituent Lok Janshakti Party's Ram Vilas Paswan, saying "he is not a national Dalit leader, not even a Paswan leader". The HAM leader accused Paswan of having "weakness for his own family", adding, "My MLAs are with me, Paswan can't come in their way."
