Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called an emergency high level meeting at Writers' Buildings to review the worsening law and order situation in the state following clashes between Trinamool Congress and Communist Party of India (Marxist) supporters. The meeting is being attended by the state chief and home secretaries as well as the state DGP and senior police officers.
Mamata Banerjee, who is ill and was scheduled to take a break from work on Tuesday, reached Writers' Building for the meeting. The meeting was called after a planned rally by the CPI(M) turned violent - as their supporters and TMC workers clashed in Bhangar in South 24 Parganas.
CPI(M) workers claim they were attacked with bombs and firearms by Trinamool workers as they were en route to Kolkata for a party rally. But Trinamool members allege that CPM supporters attacked them while passing through the area.
CPM leader Mohammed Salim criticised the Trinamool Congress government and alleged that the ruling party was behind the clashes. "Three people are serious and have been admitted in the hospital. Lathi charge also took place. There is no word of condemnation from the TMC or civil administration. This shows they have support from the top. In the last 48 hours there has been no a single word condemning the act," said Salim.
The clashes are related to the alleged assault of the CPI (M) leader Rezzak Mollah, a former state minister, by TMC MLA Arabul Islam. The CPM had set a deadline of 48 hours for the arrest of Islam.
The CPM alleged that at least six of its supporters were injured and were moved to hospitals in Kolkata. Two have reportedly sustained bullet injuries.
Thousands of Left supporters are headed for the South 24 Parganas district headquarters in Alipore for their protest demonstration. Vehicles carrying CPM supporters were allegedly stopped by Trinamool workers and then set on fire.
