Shops, markets remain shut and locals have a tough time commuting.

Kolkata: The CPI(M) strike disrupted normal life in parts of Kolkata on Saturday. The party is protesting an alleged attack on their activists by Trinamool Congress on Friday.

Shops, markets and business establishments remained closed in Santoshpur, Baghajatin and some parts of Kasba area, officials said.

At least 22 people, including a CPI(M) MLA and a Trinamool Congress councillor, were injured in a clash during a borough election under Kolkata Corporation at Baghajatin, which falls under the chief minister's assembly constituency.

No untoward incident has been reported so far, the police said. But office-goers had a tough time commuting as transport was badly affected in large areas of south Kolkata.

The CPI(M) had called a bandh in two boroughs in the wake of the violence. Armed police force and Rapid Action Force personnel are patrolling the bandh-hit areas to prevent any further incidents of violence.

Trinamool Congress and CPI(M) supporters had clashed during the Kolkata Corporation polls at Baghajatin in South 24 Parganas district on Friday, leaving ten injured.

Stone pelting occurred in the clash during the elections to borough no 11 and 12 under the added area of the Kolkata Corporation.

Among the injured were Trinamool Congress leader Rupa Bachi and CPI(M) leader Chandana Ghosh Dastidar. All were admitted to the SSKM hospital.

Police and Rapid Action Force personnel lathicharged the rival groups to disperse them.

The CPI(M) alleged Trinamool supporters provoked them when they were peacefully demonstrating against the "unethical way" the elections were being conducted in both the boroughs.

The Trinamool Congress, on the other hand, claimed the police and the CPI(M) supporters attacked them, leaving many injured.
