Cong-SP will contest polls with understanding: Mulayam
The SP president says there are no ill-feelings between the two parties.

Lucknow: Describing his party's friendship with the Congress and former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kalyan Singh as a ‘boon’, Samajwadi Party (SP) president Mulayam Singh Yadav on Saturday admitted that both the parties would contest the Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh with an “understanding”.

“Alliance or no-alliance, the Congress and SP are poised to go in for Lok Sabha polls in a friendly manner with no ill-feelings between the two,” he told reporters here.

Yadav said his recent meeting with Congress president Sonia Gandhi in this regard was very fruitful.

Both the parties had reached an agreement to contest in tandem so that the march of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and BJP could be stopped, he added.

Refusing to divulge if the formal alliance with the Congress had fallen apart due to his proximity with former UP Chief Minister Kalyan Singh, the SP, president said, “We would be able to defeat the BJP and BSP with the help of Kalayan Singh and the Congress. Their friendship is a boon for us.”

According to the sources, the party had gone to an extent assuring to ensure victory of strong Congress candidates and not pushing its own nominee if the situation demanded.
