Chennai/ New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) stopped its raid at the residence of DMK leader MK Stalin in Chennai after Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Finance Minister P Chidambaram questioned the action of the agency. Sources say Stalin has not been named in the FIR and add that the agency was just looking for a car on the complaint of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI).
The raids, two days after the DMK pulled out of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government, kicked up a political storm. The raids on Karunanidhi's younger son and heir apparent was in connection with a case involving illegal import of vehicles to the tune of Rs 20 crore. The DRI had registered a case involving the illegal import of cars. One of the vehicle - a Hummer - is allegedly being used by Stalin's actor-producer son Udhayanidhi for the past five years.
The DMK and the Opposition parties reacted sharply to the rainds, calling it political vendetta . In an unprecedented situation, even senior Ministers P Chidambaram and Kamal Nath disapproved of the raids. Calling it political vendetta, Stalin said, "I am being targeted. It is quiet clear, why I am being targeted. We will face the case legally. I am unaware of the reasons for the CBI raid."
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) questioned the timing of the CBI raids on DMK leader MK Stalin saying it will raise the issue in Parliament. BJP leader Prakash Javadekar said, "This raid proves that the government misuses the CBI, it's a politically-motivated raid. The government is willing to do anything to stay in power. We will raise this issue in Parliament."
The Samajwadi Party also called it a political revenge. "This is a case of politics of revenge. SP will never accept this. If Congress thinks this will scare us, it is not possible," SP leader Naresh Aggarwal said.
