Cabinet to meet today on MPs' revision in pay
It's raining salary hikes for our Members of Parliament. Within 72 hours of a 300 per cent hike - they could be in for another one.

New Delhi: After protests despite a three-fold salary hike, the Government could agree to another revision in pay for Members of Parliament (MPs), as the members demand for Rs 10,000 more in perks.

The Union Cabinet is expected to approve the hike in a meeting later Monday morning.

The new pay hike could be an increase in the form of allowances of MPs; like for phone call and constituency expenses.

Earlier, on Friday, the Union Cabinet approved bill to hike MPs' salary from current Rs 16,000 to Rs 50,000. But some ministers like Lalu Yadav and Mulayam Singh Yadav had rejected the offer, saying the new salary offer not enough.

The salary hike bill cleared by the cabinet on Friday was supposed to be introduced in the Lok Sabha on Saturday but wasn't included in the revised list of business. The bill is likely to be introduced next week.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee met Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Lalu Prasad and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav early on Saturday to discuss about the pay hike issue.

The panel on MPs' salary had suggested an increase in secretarial allowance from Rs 14,000 to Rs 44,000. The Cabinet has however agreed to an increase of up to Rs 20,000 only.
