Kolkata: The BJP on Thursday slammed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for announcing sops for Muslims ahead of next year's panchayat polls and said the state government had no right to distribute public money "to gather Muslim votes".
"If this cash-strapped government has so much money, why is it not providing it to the poor and even poor Muslims?" BJP's state President Rahul Sinha said.
The BJP leader described the chief minister's announcement of sops to imams as "communal" and urged her to refrain from it.
Sinha threatened to move the Calcutta High Court when the state government issued an order to this effect. Alleging the state government was acting whimsically, he said BJP would hold protests on the issue on April nine and ten and take out a procession on April 11.
