AIADMK slams Pondy govt over financial crisis
The opposition accused the AINRC government of causing financial crisis due to poor planning.

Puducherry: The opposition AIADMK on Wednesday slammed the N Rangasamy-led AINRC government for "causing financial crisis" due to poor planning and non-collection of arrears of sales tax, power tariff and excise duty.

Puducherry unit Secretary of AIADMK, A Anbalagan demanded that Chief Minister Rangasamy "immediately convene" a special session of the Assembly to discuss the "current crisis" in the revenue scenario in Puducherry and also evolve adequate and effective measures to tackle the situation.

Big power consumers owe as much as Rs 140 crore and this amount has not been collected, MLA Anbalagan alleged.

Similarly, excise duty from some of the distilleries and sales tax from petrol bunk owners were also not collected and this had accumulated to several crores of rupees, he said.

"Instead of taking practical steps the government is letting things happen, causing financial crisis," he said.

Anbalagan said that a marathon session of the Puducherry Cabinet chaired by Rangasamy was held on Monday for "hours together".

"What issues were discussed and what decisions were taken should be made public," he said, adding it should also be brought to the notice of the legislators through a special session of the Assembly.

He also demanded that taking the cue from neighbouring Tamil Nadu, the state take over the liquor retail business so that there would be "definite flow of revenue". Difference of opinion between the Chief Minister and high ranking officials was also choking the administrative apparatus, he alleged.
