Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said that they have voted for Presidential candidate Meira Kumar to protest against BJP’s injustice to the people of India.
Addressing a press conference in the state Assembly, she said, “My party has supported Meira Kumar in the Presidential polls. We voted to her to mark our protest against injustice. This is a vote for resistance.”
“We will continue to speak for the people. There are some parties which still support the BJP, but it is time for all to come together to fight the BJP in the national interest,” she added.
Hitting out at the BJP, she said, “Very few parties, apart from us, have this conviction. Eighteen political parties have come together for these polls; we thank them. To the other parties, I wish to tell you, BJP will not spare you either. This is the right time to form an alliance.”
“BJP orchestrate riots and states will have to bear the brunt? This cannot continue. We will keep fighting like tigers. They can keep indulging in politics of vindictiveness if they wish. We are ready to go to jail. We will not bow down our heads. We have registered our protest against injustice and anarchy,” she said.
While blaming the BJP for lawlessness across the country, Banerjee said, “The ruling party at the Centre are trying to sell-off the country just because they have the numbers. There is injustice, anarchy and lawlessness across the country. They do pay any heed to the opinion of people. Just because they have the numerical strength, they cannot do anything. There are constitutional norms. TMC has more than two-third majority but we never went against people’s decisions. We always believe in democracy because TMC is pro-people party.”
On Ram Nath Kovind, she said, “A President is a President. If NDA’s candidate win, we will extend our full support and respect to him.”
