To avoid passage of the bill amidst the Telangana ruckus, the BJP had said that they will not let it pass without a discussion.

New Delhi: The Central government has decided to allot six hours of discussion on Food Bill in the Parliament. The decision comes after the BJP categorically stated that although it supported the bill, it would not let it pass without a daylong discussion. The BJP pre-empted the move, sensing that the government may try to get the Food Security Bill passed in the Telangana ruckus.

Around 40 bills including the Food Security bill have been listed for consideration and passage during the twelve day long monsoon session. The government has expressed its readiness to extend the session if need be.

The Prime Minister has already sought the opposition's cooperation in the passage of the legislative business including the "most important" ordinance on Food Security Bill. "We have wasted a lot of time in the last two-three sessions and hope this is not repeated in this session. The government is willing to discuss all issues on the floor of the House", he had said while urging the opposition to ensure that the session is "truly productive and constructive with solid results".
