New Delhi: Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Vinod Rai on Wednesday denied any pressure from any quarter with regard to the 2G spectrum allocation report.
Rai said that the CAG had told the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in January 2010 that the audit report would be ready in six months, hence suo moto examination by the PAC was carried out in a parallel manner.
He further clarified that the CAG had told PAC that the audit findings could not be shared with anyone before being tabled in Parliament.
Later, speaking at the same event, PAC chairman Murli Manohar Joshi said that he had never put any pressure on CAG, pointing that the institution worked without any pressure.
"PAC had taken up 2G issue even before I joined PAC. I only checked the status of the report with the CAG when it took a long time to submit the report to PAC. I protest the way UPA is dismantling and maligning institutions like CAG," Joshi said.
Hitting out at the government in reference to the 2G spectrum allocation scam, Joshi said that the government was answerable for the misuse of the tax payers’ money.
In a veiled reference to the controversy concerning CAG 2G report, Joshi requested the Finance Minister to look into the duty structure of CAG as “there are serious gaps in implementing agencies”.
He batted for more power to the CAG, saying that there was a need to revisit its mandate.
Joshi said that CAG must have the rights to demand files, citing that it had been denied some in a few past incidents.
