University Rankings 2024: US and UK-based universities make up the majority of the top 10 in the social sciences, biological sciences, and arts and humanities

United States and United Kingdom institutions continue to be academic powerhouses in the rapidly changing world of higher education, according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024.  Universities from these nations have once again demonstrated their supremacy by obtaining the top spots in each of the 11 subject rankings. In the 20th edition of the World University Rankings, 108 nations and regions participated.

The esteemed University of Oxford, situated in the United Kingdom, has risen to prominence, according to NTDV, by taking the top rank in computer science and clinical and health sciences. In the meanwhile, American colleges captured first place in nine other subjects: engineering, law, business and economics, education, physical sciences, psychology, social sciences, life sciences, and arts and humanities. In the arts and humanities, biological sciences, and social sciences, where all 10 of the top-ranked universities are US or UK-based, it is especially clear how tightly these two nations dominate these fields.

The dominance of US and UK colleges in these rankings is still evident, notwithstanding a noticeable move towards more diversity among universities from across the globe. In contrast to the 2020 World University Rankings by subject, it is important to recognise that the top spots in the 11 subject rankings, especially in the social sciences, education, business, and economics, show a more diversified landscape.

Interestingly, Stanford University and Harvard University have emerged as the leaders after each school ranked number one in three subjects. Stanford University is at the forefront of arts and humanities, psychology, and jointly in social sciences. Harvard University on the other hand leads in tin engineering, law, and life sciences together. In addition to jointly leading in the social sciences, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology lays claim to the top spot in business and economics rankings.
