Helen Mirren, who won an Oscar for playing Queen Elizabeth in the 2006 release The Queen, also expressed her condolences after the monarch's death.

Britain’s longest-serving monarch, Queen Elizabeth II passes away after reigning for almost 70 years. She breathed her last at the age of 96 in Scotland on Thursday. As per the reports, the Queen was not keeping well of late and was under medical supervision. The news has indeed left the world heartbroken and people from all corners of the globe are mourning the Queen’s demise.

Helen Mirren, who won an Oscar for playing Queen Elizabeth in the 2006 release The Queen, also expressed her condolences after the monarch’s death. “I am proud to be an Elizabethan. We mourn a woman, who, with or without the crown, was the epitome of nobility," wrote Mirren on her social media handle with a black and white picture of Queen Elizabeth from her younger years.

Before Mirren’s film, The Queen, was released, she penned a letter to the Queen of England. She apologised to her in advance for the film, which was set around the time of the death of Princess Diana. Speaking to the Radio Times, Mirren had said that she realised they were investigating a profoundly painful part of the Queen’s life, so she wrote to her. “I said: ‘We are doing this film. We are investigating a very difficult time in your life. I hope it’s not too awful for you,’" Mirren had said.

“I just said that in my research, I found myself with a growing respect for her, and I just wanted to say that," she said adding that although the Queen did not write her back, her secretary did.

Following the demise of Queen Elizabeth II, her son King Charles III in a statement said that the death of his beloved mother was a moment of “great sadness" for him and his family. Details about The Queen’s state funeral are likely to be announced soon. A period of 10-day national mourning has been declared. As per the reports, her Majesty will be laid to rest alongside her husband, Prince Philip, who died aged 99. The Queen is survived by four children: Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, and eight grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren.
