Afghanistan took on Australia at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday. Having won the toss, Afghanistan decided that they would be batting first. Things started well for them as Ibrahim Zadran went on to smash a whopping 129 runs in 143 balls.
Towards the end of their innings, Rashid Khan notched up another 35 runs in only 18 balls. His heroics helped his side reach an impressive total of 291 runs while losing only five wickets. In the second innings, Afghanistan were off to a flying start thanks to early wickets plucked by Azmatullah Omarzai and Naveen-ul-Haq.
The Afghan bowlers continued to pluck wickets in fast intervals leaving the Australian side seven wickets down while scoring only 91 runs. Rashid made a further impact in the game by plucking the wickets of Marcus Stoinis in the 17th over and also dismissing Mitchell Starc in the 19th over. That is when Glenn Maxwell stepped up big for his side smashing 201 runs for Australia in 128 balls. He stitched a formidable partnership with Pat Cummins and remained unbeaten till the end of the chase. Maxwell’s record-breaking chase helped Australia secure a victory by three wickets.

With the historic win, Australia became the third team to secure a spot in the knockout phase after India and South Africa. On the flip side, Afghanistan still have some hopes of making the semi-finals in India. They will be facing South Africa on November 10 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad Gujarat. They would have to win their game to remain in contention for the semi-finals. New Zealand, Pakistan and Afghanistan are all at four victories each. With just one game remaining to play it will be interesting to see who would take the final spot in the playoffs.
